Pediatric Nursing, or the field of nursing that relates to dealing with children, is a specialized field and sometimes stressful. Pediatric nursing is not for everyone. Before deciding to specialize in pediatric nursing is important to understand some of the disadvantages to the field as well as benefits.

How can I become a Pediatric Nurse?

Pediatric nursing is not offered as a specialty in nursing, pediatric nurses for the training they receive is through work. Some hospitals provide a guideline for nurses who are interested in pediatric nursing. This training includes classroom and clinical training. Other hospitals do all their training on the floor, the new partnership with an experienced pediatric nurse nurse as a mentor. Regardless of which method is used in the hospital where he is employed, no one expects you to come directly from nursing school prepared to work in pediatrics, without additional training.

In addition to receiving training in the hospital, there are specialized courses available to nurses who are interested in becoming pediatric nurses. The American Heart Association offers a Pediatric Advanced Life Support course, and the Emergency Nurses Association offers the Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course. There is also the Society of Pediatric Nurses, a professional association for those in the field. After receiving training in pediatric nursing, you may want to obtain the Certificate Pediatric Nurse certificate, which is available for examination.

I want to become a Pediatric Nurse?

Although these facts address the amount of training that is involved in pediatric nursing, do not explain the emotional toll of working as a pediatric nurse. Because pediatric nurses work exclusively with the eighteen years he can be a difficult job. Working with young patients who are very ill is stressful. Not only must you deal with your patient, but the parents too. It is a work that can be rewarding, but well drained. For those who are interested in working with children, helps to understand what is involved.

Some types of pediatric nursing is less stressful than others. Working in the emergency room of a pediatric hospital will provide a variety of good business for the day, and most patients suffering cuts, broken bones and other injuries that, while scary, are highly treatable. Working as a nurse in the pediatric oncology unit, on the other hand, is a very difficult task. The day exposure to extremely ill children and their parents require a distracted special person to perform this work. Another challenge that many people have to work around pediatric patients who are very ill is that children who spend much time in hospital, becoming close to their caregivers, and the reverse is true too. A child in the oncology unit can be there for weeks at a time, or come in several times a week. This creates a strong bond between the patient and the nurse that if the patient does not survive, it is very painful.

For those who can work as a pediatric nurse with very sick patients, the work can be very rewarding. The joy of seeing a child to regain their strength and begin to return to school can not be compared to any other situation, and you develop bonds with their young patients is invaluable.

To determine whether it is appropriate to work as a pediatric nurse, it helps to be very self-aware. Are you easily upset? Not seeing other people sad or upset you scared? If so, pediatric nursing may not be your best career. If you want to work with children but are concerned that may not be very comfortable working around sick children, consider a career as a pediatric nurse in the emergency room or surgical. In places that are less exposed to the disease and are not children around the same for long periods of time.

Do you work for Pediatric Nursing

If you choose to become a pediatric nurse, a series of steps you can take to reduce the stress of their work. Regular exercise and healthy eating both contribute to a general feeling of well-being. It is also important to develop an informal support group of friends or relatives who you can talk about the stress of your day. Another way to reduce the stress involved in pediatric nursing is to rotate to other units. Spend some time in the pediatric intensive care unit, and then move to the OR. This not only give you an emotional break, but provides you with a well rounded skill set.
